"Spirit of Sacrifice" The Alamo Cenotaph "From the fire that burned their bodies rose the eternal spirit of sublime heroic sacrifice which gave birth to an empire state" The Alamo Cenotaph* is the 60-foot monument built in celebration of the Texas centennial of the Alamo battle that incorporates both sculptured images of Alamo garrison leaders and all the Alamo defender names known at that time. Titled the "Spirit of Sacrifice", the monument was completed in 1939. San Antonio Mayor, Maury Maverick was joined by many San Antonio, State, and Federal notables for the solemn dedication ceremony on November 11, 1940. Created by Italian sculptor Pompeo Coppini, a San Antonio resident, the Alamo Cenotaph was constructed of white marble and granite. Built in Alamo Plaza in memory of the Alamo heroes who sacrificed their lives in defense of Texas liberty on March 6, 1836. Choosing to never surrender nor retreat, these brave hearts, with flag still proudly waving, perished in the flames of immortality in the hope that their high sacrifice might lead to the founding of the independent Republic of Texas. *From the Greek words kenos, (empty) and taphos, (tomb) - cenotaphs are tombs or monuments erected to honor a person or persons whose remains are elsewhere or their whereabouts unknown. The Alamo Chapter of the Sons of the Republic of Te1as proudly sponsors the 2019 Alamo Cenotaph's "Spirit of Sacrifice" commemorative medal. Visit www.alamosrt.com for SRT membership information.
